What would you do?

Okay, probably only the mothers reading this will understand the question I am about to ask and not be too grossed out by it!

What do you do when you put your toddler down for his nap and you realize that he has a huge poop in his diaper after he has fallen asleep??? Austin played for a while after I laid him down and I even heard him yell my name a few times but I didn't go check because he tried this little ploy the other day to stall on going to sleep. He settled down and went to sleep so I didn't think anything of it. When I walked by the room he is in (we are visiting at my Mom's right now), my nose caught the odor all the way out in the hall! Well, I do have a sensitive nose, but that is still pretty bad. So, now I feel terrible!!

Do I let him sleep and enjoy a little peace or do I wake him up to change him???? What a fun dilemma I am facing right now! :) What would you do?

Let him sleep!!! As long as he's sleeping he's fine. Just rush in after he wakes up and then change him. You will regret it if you wake him up to change him because then he won't go back down and he'll be grumpy later on.

That's my "I'm almost a mom" advise. :)

I was just about to write everything Anna just said! I'm for the sleep now, change after...especially if he's not even bothered by it!

Let him sleep! I know it's disgusting, but it's far worse to have a grouchy child than a stinky room and his little bottom won't be the worse for wear for just an hour or so. I always try to err on the side of sleep!

Smelly trumps grumpy, rashy trumps smelly. Let your sweetie boy sleep unless he has very sensitive skin and is prone to rashes, because otherwise it won't hurt a thing for him to have stinky biscuits while he is sleeping. Good job knowing how to avoid the naptime stalling that he has already tested you with. Just be prepared to make slight modifications on the list of things that are allowed to delay naptime, according to your child's age, character and sibling count. It starts with naptime is naptime, then moves to naptime is naptime UNLESS he makes a poopy, then it changes to naptime is naptime Unless he makes a poopy OR little brother is practicing his artistic skills with diaper cream on the carpet, etc...Best wishes to you. Now I am off to go look at old photos of "naptime mishaps" from my own three darlings.

I'm the same--leave the poop while baby sleeps! I can remember being super concerned about that when Marty was little and taking four hour naps. I was worried that his little bottom would get red by the time he woke up and I was able to change him. But if ever that happens now, I just make sure to apply diaper rash cream when I change him after he wakes up--whether or not he's red. Because even if there's no rash, his skin is probably pretty sensitive, so it's best to be pre-emptive about it. Just keep your nose plugged in the meantime... (smile).

Thanks for all the advice!! It seems that everyone is in agreement! I did let Austin sleep for 2 hours and then I woke him up. I wasn't so worried about his little booty - I know diaper rash cream can take care of it! I was just grossed out thinking about it!

Okay, you got great advice! I just have one thing to add....you KNOW I have been through this too....just make SURE you get right to him when he wakes up because he might decide he doesn't want that diaper ON anymore, and then it WILL be disgusting!

I still think he is the cutest boy even when he "stinks"...and his lil bro too!

Glad to hear that you sorted it out Beckie! It is a dilemma, but I agree with the others in letting him sleep. I've woken Priya up during the night when this has happened and she cried all the way through the changing but went right back to sleep. If I did that during a nap though she'd never go back to bed. There's always something new to wonder about in this wonderful thing called motherhood, eh? :) It's great to have other moms to bounce ideas off of! :)
